How to get to Humantay Lake?

To get to this natural wonder you will have to take a car from Cusco to Mollepata, at the bus terminal of Arcopata (US$ 5) for the time of 1 hour and 40 min. Arrived in Mollepata you will have to find a place where you can have breakfast (US$ 2.5). After breakfast you have to hire the services of a taxi driver to take you to Soraypampa, the taxi will charge an approximate of US$ 10 and if by chance there are more people who want to go there will be less. Then you will have to pay the entrance to Lake Humantay (US$ 3.5).

After arriving in Soraypampa you will have to walk for at least 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach the Humantay lagoon (if you do not want to walk you can rent a horse), the first 20 minutes of walking is semi-plane and the rest is already up hill.

Humantay, is a snow-covered mountain that is part of the Andean mountain range and gives rise to the formation of this splendid lagoon that, due to its unique turquoise color, generates the interest of foreign and national visitors. With a mystical air, the lagoon is visited by shamans and tourists from all over the world to leave offerings to the Pachamama, deity that represents mother earth in the Inca culture. Through the placement of stones (apachetas), an offering is offered to the Pachamama thanking him for having successfully arrived at the lagoon, as well as for asking him to accompany them on their journey.

According to the inhabitants, the Humantay mountain is the youngest son of the Apu Salkantay, and they would be in charge of rationalizing and distributing the water that comes down from its snows to the populations that live at the foot of these impressive snowcapped mountains.

The difficulty of the walk towards the lake Humantay is average. You have to walk 2 km uphill for the time of 1 hour approx. (according to physical condition), if you do not have a good physical condition we recommend renting a horse at the beginning of the bed the price is S / 100.00 approx. round trip, depends a lot on the day's demand.

Recommendations

  • It is recommended to visit the lagoon in the morning hours to avoid frightening away the return of the ducks to the lagoon.
  • To start the walk it is suggested to wear comfortable clothes, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat or cap and a walking stick.
